If you’re not yet familiar with the name Denis Ulanov, you might want to get used to it — because the 85kg lifter from Kazakhstan is throwing down some serious weight in the gym. Recently during training, he executed a seemingly easy 225kg clean and jerk (or 496lb). Heavy? Of course. But that’s not all. It’s 5kg heavier than the current clean and jerk world record for his weight class, held by Kianoush Rostami, who took home the gold in Rio in 2016.

Oh, and by the way, he’s 23 years old. Check it out below.

Imagine pulling nearly 500 pounds off the ground hard and fast enough to then get underneath it and stand it up; and he makes it look like a piece of cake.

Being so young in the sport, Ulanov probably has even more in the tank. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he certainly didn’t disappoint. Lifting 175kg in the snatch and 215kg for the clean and jerk for a total of 390kg, he landed in fourth; but after one athlete tested positive for a banned substance, Ulanov was bumped up and received the bronze medal.

While Kazakhstan currently can’t compete due to the IWF ban, we can expect big things from him the next time he takes the platform at an international competition.
