Movement standards have become a “thing” (and a source of much drama). 20.1 might be in the books, but HQ was hard at work reviewing videos submissions and announced that they’re issuing penalties to a number of athletes, including Samantha Briggs and Frederik Aegidius. Aegidius got dinged for his burpees, and Briggs for both her burpees and ground-to-overhead. The result is that qualifying for the Games using the Open is all but out of the question.

Both athletes addressed the penalties on Instagram.

When it rains it pours. This was a gut check. 24h after being dropped on 20.1, 20.3 or 18.4 was released with two movements I have struggled with in the past. My fight for a qualifying spot in the 2020 OPEN is over, but I’m of the firm belief that if you decide to do something, you finish it and you give it your best effort. I felt like I did that today. Not in the best headspace and easy to drown yourself in negativity given the circumstances and workout ahead of me. Goal was to finish the workout. And I did. Just. On to 20.4. DISCLAIMER – don’t do this at home. if any of your members look like me on the deadlifts. Stop them. Immediately. I’m a competitor, I know the risk but chose to push through.

A number of athletes also received a penalty for a false start, including Willy Georges and Dani Speegle.

What do you think of the penalties?
