If you own a CrossFit box, odds are you’ve visited many others for inspiration. When you start to grow your own community, one thought dominates your mind: “My gym is going to be different.” But how? Several factors can make a box unique, and should be considered when trying to grow your new community.

Nowadays, you can find a Crossfit box on every corner. It’s one of the most competitive sports, and similarly, one of the most competitive businesses. The added value you will get from putting the extra effort into your own business will help you stand out amongst the crowd. While each box will have its unique personality and essence, make no mistake about it: you will need to go the extra mile to come out on top. We are not talking about a highly technological, super luxurious place, but something that feels like home away from home for your members.

So, how can you achieve this?

Service

The way you run your business and how well your coaches are trained are highly valuable and critical in making a box distinct. From the CrossFit newbie to the seasoned competitor, every single member should get cared for prudently. A new member must be confident that their fitness levels will be reasonably scaled to reach their goals, whatever they may be. On the other hand, an experienced athlete will feel well taken care of by training with a knowledgable staff that provides the necessary guidance.

It is also essential the coaches are well-trained and know how to make informed decisions about scaling and technique corrections.

Programming is another crucial area. One could fall into the mistake of thinking Crossfit programming is entirely random. On the contrary, it should be thought of weeks or months in advance. Programming should target different areas, and WODs should complement each other over time. Working the same muscles over and over again could lead to burnout or even severe injury.

Provide top notch service and quality programming, and your members will keep coming back for more.

Cleanliness

Although boxes are not known for being the cleanest places on earth, filthy bathrooms and kitchen areas will not make anyone comfortable. Boxes with clean bathrooms, showers and lobbies are necessary to keep members satisfied.

Also, it is a good idea to encourage members to keep the place orderly and clean, and to always pick up after themselves. No one wants to use a sweaty AbMat or GHD machine. Yes, they are paying for your service; but you are not their maid.

Equipment

It’s always a relief to hit a box that despite being full of people, ensures you have the required equipment for training and enough space to do it. Invest in quality equipment that can stand up to the daily wear and tear, to save yourself maintenance hassles in the future. Repair things in a timely manner, and add equipment to your gym as the budget allows — like rowers, bikes and Ski Ergs.

Similar to keeping the gym clean, members should be taught the proper way to use equipment, and encouraged to take care of it over time. Nobody wants an increase in their membership fee to cover constant equipment repairs.

There are all types of questions you should ask yourself when it comes to adding real value to your box, so that you can continue welcoming new members while retaining old ones. Remember: clients look for a place where they can be comfortable, feel welcomed and become a better version of themselves.
