Regionals are almost here, and the pool of athletes is soon to get smaller. The best of each region are coming together to fight for their spot on the Games floor. Week 1 kicks off with the East Regional, Europe Regional, and South Regional. Here are the athletes we’ve got our eyes on.

East Regional

For the men, we’re itching to see what Tim Paulson is going to bring to the table. He’s currently standing in first for the North East and ninth overall. He’s got seven Opens under his belt and has been steadily climbing in rankings. He’s definitely a competitor to look out for.

For the ladies, intuition tells us Carolyne Prevost is going to do some serious damage. Prevost has mastered not only functional fitness but hockey and soccer as well, making her one versatile athlete. She’s been training hard for this opportunity, and we know she’s going to show up at Regionals hungry for a win.

Europe Regional

Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. The former gymnast is only 25 years old, but he’s already a four-time CrossFit Games veteran and finished third at the 2015 Games. You don’t mess with Iceland.

This region was ridiculously competitive for the ladies, and it’s hard to pick just one — but we’re going to have to go with Annie Thorisdottir. Year after year, she’s proven to be both versatile and consistent — two traits that pay off greatly in the game of functional fitness. She’s a seasoned competitor, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see her on the podium when all is said and done this year.

South Regional

You might not yet be familiar with Tommy Vinas, but you will be. This was his second Open, although don’t let that fool you. He finished at the top of his region, and something tells us he’s just getting started.

This was another tough one, but we’re watching Margaux Alvarez. This athlete is not to be underestimated. She’s competed in the Open since 2012, and nobody knows the competition like she does. Expect big things from her.
